Harrisburg, PA- August 20, 2012 September 21st commemorates a ‘Day of Peace’ all over the world! This worldwide event, also referred to as “Peace Day” is a time for individuals, communities and businesses to cease conflict and practice acts that promote peace and community wholeness. The day was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 with the first Peace Day celebration launching in September 1982. Peace Day has also come to be known as a ‘Day of Ceasefire’, a day where communities are encouraged to promote freedom from insecurity and violence.
On September 21st, Brethren Community Ministries (BCM), a Harrisburg based non-profit, will celebrate Peace Day by honoring the graduates of its Agape-Satyagraha program, a conflict resolution program for youth ages 11-18. Youth progress through five levels of skills training teaching them how to resolve conflict without violence while managing anger and improving communication skills. The program services youth primarily in the South Allison Hill area and has expanded into other neighboring communities.
Since the inception of the program, founder, Gerald Rhoades, has expanded the Agape-Satyagraha training to seven sites from Delaware to California in partnership with the national nonprofit, On Earth Peace. BCM further serves the community through a food distribution initiative feeding almost 100 families weekly. The organization also offers a computer program to assist individuals with developing basic computer skills. Attendees have the opportunity to earn a free computer while gaining valuable training.
During the evening, Brethren Community Ministries will also honor three individuals with the 2012 PEACEMAKER Awards. Peacemaker Awards are given to individuals who have worked to build the community and bring restoration through the creation of programs, support of existing programs or outstanding individual service to communities in need.
This year, Brethren Community Ministries is pleased to honor the following as its 2012 PEACEMAKERS:
- Representative Ron Buxton representing the 103rd legislative district
- Sanford Krevsky, Esq. of Krevsky, Rosen, P.C.
- Dr. LaVette Paige of the MLKBaptistChurch
Honorees will be recognized during the 7th Annual Agape-Satyagraha Dinner on Friday, September 21st, 6:00pm at the Best Western Premier in Harrisburg located at 800 East Park Drive. This elegant evening includes a silent auction and live entertainment.
