Highmark Walk – Walk for Health, Walk for bcmPEACE

What would you typically be doing on a Saturday morning? Sleeping in? Running errands? Watching cartoons? There’s a Saturday in May where something extraordinary is happening, and you can be part of making positive changes in South Allison Hill and beyond.

Saturday, May 20 at Harrisburg Area Community College, Highmark will again sponsor their life-giving Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community, where more than 40 local nonprofit organizations have the opportunity – at no cost to them – to raise awareness, support and money for their causes. Highmark underwrites the event so that charities can keep all fundraising proceeds. Brethren Community Ministries is one of those organizations, and the Highmark Walk is our biggest fundraiser of the year!

By becoming a Walker, a Team Leader, or a Virtual Walker (fundraising partner), you are helping bcmPEACE to continue and even increase its effective ministry in the city of Harrisburg. bcmPEACE’s mission is to serve “Allison Hill in becoming a safer, healthier community, empowered by God’s peace.” This mission is achieved by ministry partners like you as you financially support bcmPEACE, volunteer for bcmPEACE programs, spread the message of bcmPEACE through word-of-mouth, and empower bcmPEACE through your faithful prayers and service. The Highmark Walk is one of many ways to demonstrate your support for the work of bcmPEACE; work that includes feeding families, educating community youth in the ways of nonviolence, guiding parents, empowering citizens with computer classes and other life skills, and keeping kids safe through our Kids Club.

To start your own walk team, to join an existing team, or to make a donation to the Highmark Walk, simply click here and search for “BCMPeace.” Use the next six weeks to raise funds and recruit walkers or virtual walkers, and then join us for an extraordinary Saturday in May where we all together can make a world of difference in our community.

Highmark Walk a Huge Success Despite Rain

No one melted.

A little rain can’t stop a collection of determined people who are out supporting their favorite charitable organizations. We had a great turnout at the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community on the campus of HACC, and we reached our financial goal of raising $15,000!  Thanks to everyone who helped us finish in 9th place in funds raised out of the 47 participating organizations….and there were some pretty large organizations like Salvation Army and Penn State Hershey Medical Center participating.  The average nonprofit raised $7,400, and we doubled that!

Highmark sponsors this event each year, and pays all set-up and overhead costs on behalf of the charities that participate so that 100% of the donations go straight to the organization of choice. bcmPEACE is proud of the overwhelming support our friends showed by coming out in inclement weather to represent us to the wider community and help us raise money. The money raised by this and other fundraising events each year provide leadership, program costs, and community development through our many programs

Strike Out Violence Bowl-A-Thon October 9, 2016

Bowling Pins w Logo

bcmPEACE is pleased to announce its first annual “Strike Out Violence” Bowl-A-Thon. Registration is open now for this event. You are encouraged to form a team (your friends, your family, your office, your school club, your youth group, etc) and each person is to raise $100 so that each lane raises $600. If you are an individual or a small group, we will combine you with others to create a 6-person lane at the event.

Each team is also encouraged to adopt a theme (Disco, the 80’s, a video game, book characters, etc) and dress accordingly. Prizes will be awarded to teams who really capture the spirit of their theme.

There will also be prizes raffled off, and teams that register early will automatically receive a starter set of raffle tickets. Other tickets will be available for purchase on-site.

Even children and bad bowlers are invited to participate — you can mark on your registration form if you require a bumper lane!

In addition to bowling, you are also encouraged to do fundraising (to, or even above, the $100 entry fee per person/$600 per team). You can create a team profile on the registration page, and then share it through email and social networks to get others to financially sponsor you. We call these generous donors “Virtual Bowlers.”

Visit our Registration Page to begin the process of signing up as a team, and individual, a team sponsor, a corporate sponsor, or a Virtual Bowler.

The Bowl-A-Thon will be at Red Crown Bowling, 2471 Sycamore Street in Harrisburg on Sunday, October 9, from 2pm-5pm.  Email us at strikeoutviolence2016@gmail.com for more information or call 717-234-0415 and ask for bcmPEACE.

Take Us Out to the Ballgame! Butler’s Bunch Youth Outing

Thanks to Butler’s Bunch, an initiative of the Mark L. Butler Foundation, 25 teens and several adult volunteers from the Agape-Satyagraha conflict resolution and leadership development training program of bcmPEACE were invited to attend a Harrisburg Senators baseball game.

Butler’s Bunch was founded by Mark L. Butler (MLB, owner of Ollie’s Bargain Outlets and majority owner of the Harrisburg Senators) in 2012 as a program interested in partnering with agencies in the community who work with underprivileged children and youth to Make Life Better (MLB).

The “Butler’s Bunch” program includes complimentary ticket packages to watch Senators games at FNB Field.   The ticket packages donated by Butler’s Bunch to bcmPEACE’s Agape-Satyagraha program included for every attendee a complimentary game ticket, dinner voucher redeemable at the ballpark, custom t-shirt and transportation to and from bcmPEACE.  To be eligible, Agape-Satyagraha youth regularly attended the weekly meeting and demonstrated positive behavior and good choices.

They can’t wait to go again!  Their next time out to the FNB Field will be Wednesday, August 17, as part of Butler’s Bunch.  Thanks Butler’s Bunch!
